Two great things happened in 1981, I was born and Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas introduced in their book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation; the twelve principles of animation. This was an effort to give their animations more life with more realism.

The twelve principles consists of:

  • Squash and Stretch
  • Anticipation

  • Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose
  • Follow Through and Overlapping Action
  • Ease In and Ease Out
  • Arc
  • Secondary Action
  • Timing
  • Exaggeration
  • Solid drawing
  • Appeal

In this video from Alan Becker he will show and explain the different principles and how you can apply them to your animations.
